the why?

Why radiation oncology?

A verity that the humanity behind healthcare stands on is ‘A life saved is a family saved and many such families together form the life of our world’ and I am longing to play a role in holding the life of this world together as a Radiation Oncologist saving lives from the precipice through technology and contribute to its research work.

The evolution of medicine towards making incremental improvement in the quality of life over the past few years and the concept of using radiation to manage malignant growth, in my opinion is a fascinating advancement which gives oncology a special place in my heart. Yet, there is more work and research to be done to improve the outcome of cancer patients overall, and strive towards a world where a diagnosis of cancer is not fatal or life altering and I want to be part of the revolution and contribute towards the innovations and research advancements in this field.

I will deliver to my residency program my distinct earnestness, sincerity and unflinching hard work. I believe I have the drive and judgement to embark on this inspiring and challenging path of a radiation oncologist, researcher, caregiver but most importantly a friend. I am eagerly looking forward to joining your team.

The who?

Why medicine?

“Lose not hope because It’s always the darkest before dawn” is the precis for my journey . Being a witness to a seven year olds exhaustive treatment for his homozygous sickle cell disease has a lasting impact in one’s memory. Every now and then he would have a crisis, his nails would aggressively press against my hand, his tears would wet the floor, his body curled up wishing for nothing but relief. These episodes sometimes would last for hours. I was as old as my nephew, I drew upon his frustration. It was unsettling and Exposed me to countless visits to hospitals and religious homecare to numb his pain, instilled the first spark in me to be a doctor. To be the same light to ease the physical as well as emotional pain that gripped my nephew.

With this desire and determination to provide medical services to the best of my abilities, I am enthusiastically pursuing further training here in the United States. My journey has endowed me with certain inalienable traits that will not only make me a successful internist but also a well balanced physician. My goal is to bring awareness, educate the common masses about preventable diseases and to make this world a better place by providing affordable medical care and show that with perseverance anything is possible is a testament to my American Dream . I aspire to [University name]’s Internal Medicine residency program to sharpen my clinical skills and train in an environment where the primary focus is to create leaps in medicine and be a part of the close knit community of internists. I am eagerly waiting to join the team and looking forward to a residency.

The deSire?

Internal medicine applicant

Anxiously waiting behind the curtain with jittering feet and shivering hands, I would hear the thunderous claps of the audience. Wearing a black slack with crisp streaks,  a clean pressed white shirt,  a white long coat and a stethoscope around my neck, I was to play the role of a doctor. Exuding with confidence and fluency that the outfit gave, my performance brought in waves of applause. Even though the skit lasted only for a few minutes, a seed was sown in a 9 year old boy. With this new found passion I found myself constantly intrigued with the anatomy of homo-sapiens. This led me to  indulge deep into science. This drive for curiosity and passion led me to perform well in school where  I worked hard to keep my grades up along with playing volleyball for the school team, this helped me lead a balanced life. Rigorous and long were my nights after returning from hours of Volleyball practice. The discipline and commitment that volleyball taught me will last an eternity.

Reminiscing my service to the underserved people in Pakistan has helped me develop a deeper understanding not only of the socio-economic gradient of health but also the importance of human touch. Only by practicing medicine, i can fulfil my passion to be an internist and my vision to help alleviate pain.I aspire to your Internal Medicine residency program to sharpen my clinical skills and train in an environment where the primary focus is to create leaps in medicine as well as be a part of the close knit community of internists. I am eagerly waiting to join the family and looking forward to a residency.
